Negotiation & Alternative Dispute Resolution – Semester (81330)

January 10, 2015

*The Course Reader is now available for purchase at Professional Image – University (South King Street), and the cost is $33.20.
THE ATTACHMENT IS THE SAME MATERIAL THAT IS PASTED BELOW
TO:                    Negotiations & ADR Students
FROM:               John Barkai
SUBJECT:          First Class – Thursday – Jan. 15, 2015 -1:30-3:10 Classroom 3

There is no reading assigned for the first class.  In the first class, we will do a negotiation simulation that will be an important foundation for the whole semester. I want you to do this negotiation before you read any class materials about negotiation and dispute resolution. Come with an open mind and be ready to negotiate!

I AM STILL SETTING UP THE ELECTRONIC MATERIALS ON THE WEB. THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE BEFORE YOU NEED THEM. NOT ALL OF THESE LINKS WILL WORK TODAY 1-9-2015

You can find the syllabus on my website at (and attached to this message)http://www2.hawaii.edu/~barkai/neg/S-NEG.doc
The webpage for the class is athttp://www2.hawaii.edu/~barkai/L508.html
The webpage below has my handoutshttp://www2.hawaii.edu/~barkai/ADR-HO.html
which means that you do not need to purchase them, but that is your choice. Paper handouts for the class will soon be available for purchase from Professional Image. However, all the handouts that will be at Professional Image are available to you in digital form on the webpage http://www2.hawaii.edu/~barkai/ADR-HO.html
In addition, I have a Dropbox folder for the class which has all the handouts above and other material. As you probably know, you can copy files out of the Dropbox folder to your own computer, but please do not MOVE or DELETE Dropbox files or else they will not be available to the rest of us. Here is the link to that a folder –
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0kat3bpf3mu4dqc/AADpZ-V82989ue8-Tc12p4-Sa?dl=0

I will send the link directly to your email address over the weekend or next week.

The webpage below has the PowerPoint slides I use in class
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~barkai/pptadr.html.
This page will be updated during the semester. The current slides posted are from prior presentations.

Our simple, yet powerful text, Getting to Yes, Fisher, Ury, and Patton is a classic. The second edition is often available from Amazon in “used” condition for about $.01. It is also in almost every library in America. The second edition is on the web in PDF form at http://6thfloor.pp.fi/fgv/gettingtoyes.pdf

There is also a newer 2011 edition with some updated text, but the 2nd edition (1991) is just fine for our class.
