Welcome to International Ocean law. This course will be as expansive and exciting as the sea itself. It will encompass the Law of the Sea Convention, also known as the Constitution for the Ocean, coastal and other maritime boundary disputes, fishing rights and conservation, maritime treaties that govern international shipping, environmental considerations such as the protection of marine life, climate change, enforcement of pollution cleanup and guidance on scientific research, piracy and terrorism at sea, developments in the Arctic, the rights of whales and other marine creatures and military and national security issues. We will examine some of the hotly contested matters that threaten peace and strain relations between States, including among other things the South China Sea, Dokdo/Takeshima, Impeccable Incident, Greenpeace and the Arctic Sunrise, Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, geoengineering, deep seabed mining and other activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction. In addition we will study international dispute procedures and decisions of international tribunals.
Please note that the readings for the first assignment have been added to Laulima.
