I missed the deadline. What do I do?: You may not apply for the student health plan for the semester you have missed the deadline. You must purchase insurance directly from a health insurance company in order to be covered until you are allowed to enroll again. See below for other health insurance options. Please be sure to enroll for the next semester as soon as the enrollment period begins.

HEALTH INSURANCE FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS

Health Insurance Coverage for graduating students differs by semester. If you are graduating in the Spring, coverage ends on graduation day. If you are graduating in the Fall, coverage ends on December 31.

Do not let your health insurance coverage lapse.

Graduating students on the UH Student Plan must contact HMSA to purchase an individual plan if they would like to continue their coverage. Contact HMSA’s Community Sales and Services at (808) 948-5555 or visit HMSA Health Plans [hmsa.com] to compare plans. You must apply by the 15th day of a given month to receive coverage on the 1st of the following month. (e.g. Apply by March 15 to be covered by April 1, otherwise you coverage will begin May 1)  If you qualify for financial assistance, you may also apply for HMSA coverage via HealthCare.gov.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR HEALTH INSURANCE INCLUDE:

  • Kaiser Permanente [kaiserpermanente.org]: Open enrollment is typically from the beginning of November through the end of January the following year. After January 31, see Enrolling During a Special Enrollment Period [kaiserpermanente.org]  Graduation is considered a “loss of health care coverage” triggering event. You must apply by the 15th day of a given month to receive coverage on the 1st of the following month. Call 1-800-494-5314 for more information.
  • HealthCare.gov:  Graduation is considered a “loss of health care coverage” triggering event.  See if you qualify for the Special Enrollment Period [healthcare.gov].  You must apply by May 15 for you to have coverage beginning on June 1.  Call 1-800-318-2596 for more information.
