SUMMER PROGRAM APPLICATION

Interested students must fill out the online Hawai‘i Summer Law Program Application [docs.google.com].

2023 Application: There is no application fee; the deadline to apply is May 1. Applications received after this date will be considered on a space-available basis.

If you are not a UH Law student, please send us a Letter of Good Standing from your academic dean stating that you are in good academic standing and eligible to continue in your law school. Please also send us your social security number and date of birth by phone or mail, but not by email.

We will notify you about your admission to the program and provide information on how to register online for courses. Course registration will begin in early March. Please note that some courses have different start and end dates.

SUMMER PROGRAM TUITION

Tuition for Summer 2023 is $933 per credit for Hawaii residents and non-residents. Calculate your total tuition by multiplying this amount by the total number of credits.

FINANCIAL AID

Students should check with their home institutions whether they are eligible to receive financial aid for this Program. A full-time summer course load is eight credits. Students need to take at least four credits to qualify for Financial Aid.

University of Hawai‘i law students should consult with our Director Law Student Financial Assistance Heather Smith-Lee at smithhea@hawaii.edu for personal assistance. The deadline to complete the online UH Manoa Summer Financial Aid Application is April 15, 2023. Law students are eligible to receive Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and Graduate Plus Loans. Remember, you must take at least 4 credits to receive financial aid. Your financial aid will be disbursed 10 days before you reach half-time enrollment (4 credits) or at the start of the Summer term (for those enrolled in SYS or Externship).  If you are taking less than 4 credits in the first summer session, your aid will not be disbursed until 10 days before you reach half-time status.

The William S. Richardson School of Law code for financial aid is 001610.

ACADEMIC POLICIES

The Hawai’i Summer Law Program meets all applicable ABA and AALS standards. Credit hours earned are routinely transferred to other ABA-approved law schools in the United States. Interested students should inquire with their home institutions about the amount of residence credit that may be obtained, consistent with ABA Standard 304.

All courses are graded on the standard grading system used at the William S. Richardson School of Law. Acceptance of any credit or grade for any course taken in the program is subject to approval by the student’s home law school. Students transferring credits to other law schools will usually find that grades of 2.0 or higher will be accepted for credit, but that the home law school will not average the Hawai’i grades as part of the student’s overall GPA. Students should consult with their home law school administrations about credit

transfer policies.

Externships are generally limited to UH Law students. Non-UH law students must be approved on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the Externship Director. Externships are offered at 2, 4, or 6 credit increments.

CANCELLATION

Students who cancel their enrollment by email or letter postmarked prior to May 1 will receive a full refund. Refunds for cancellations or withdrawals after that time will not normally be made. The University of Hawai’i School of Law reserves the right to cancel summer law courses should it become necessary for any reason. In the unlikely event this occurs, notices will be sent to all applicants prior to May 1; all payments will be completely refunded; and every effort will be made to help students enroll in another summer program.

SUMMER HOUSING & PARKING

Past experience has shown that summer session students prefer as much flexibility as possible in selecting and arranging their accommodations in Hawai‘i. Each student is responsible for arranging his or her own accommodations in Hawai‘i. The Hawai‘i Summer Law Program has negotiated special rates to assist students in locating suitable housing but is not responsible for making arrangements or for any errors that may occur. Students should contact housing providers directly for reservations and rates.

On-Campus Housing

On-campus housing is generally the cheapest and most convenient housing option. Room rates range from $700–1,000 from June 10–July 19, with a mandatory meal plan, which is about $18 per day for any two meals. To apply for housing, you must fill out and submit the Housing Application, which asks for your Summer Law Student I.D. number. Student I.D. numbers will be given out upon Admission to the Program. Applications will be ready in late February on the UH Housing website.

Application for admission to the Hawai‘i Summer Law Program and applications for University housing are separate procedures. Admission to one does not signify admission to the other.

Off-Campus Housing

If you choose to live off-campus, make housing arrangements well before your arrival. Rental rates in Honolulu are high and competition for available space is keen. Students contract for off-campus housing directly with the landlord. There is no place on campus to which luggage or mail may be forwarded ahead of arrival, so plan accordingly.

University of Hawai‘i Housing Referral Service provides listings of off-campus housing options, but to login, you will need your Student I.D. number.

Parking

Evening parking permits are available for purchase online [manoa.hawaii.edu] and at the parking office (QLC Student Services Center Room 014) for a monthly flat rate. These permits are valid Monday through Friday in the lower campus parking structure from 1:30 p.m. and in the upper campus after 4:00 p.m. Evening permits are also valid for the entire Mānoa campus all day on Saturday and Sunday.

For more evening parking permit sales information, call the UHM Parking Office at (808) 956-8899 or email us.
