Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law
Overview
The William S. Richardson School of Law established the Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law (IAPBL) in June 2006. The Institute’s goal is to become the premier academic center for research and training in the rapidly growing field of business law in Asia and the Pacific. The Institute focuses on areas of great importance to Asia and Hawai‘i, including commercial law, insolvency and secured transactions, corporate law and business transactions, securities, intellectual property, real estate financing, and labor law issues. The Institute’s activities facilitate direct exchanges between the academic, legal, and business communities in Hawai‘i and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Scholarship, Research, and Education
IAPBL serves as the umbrella for the research and academic activities of its Fellows (full-time academics drawn from the Law School and the University of Hawaiʻi), Research Fellows (academics and professionals from outside the University of Hawaiʻi who are associated with the Institute for a period of months or on an ongoing basis), and short-term Visiting Fellows from outside the University of Hawaiʻi.
Training
IAPBL also serves as a forum for Hawaiʻi’s lawyers and accountants, business professionals, academics, judges, and policy-makers to learn about Asian-Pacific business law issues and to interact with their counterparts throughout the region. IAPBL thus sponsors programs and symposia touching upon cutting-edge issues in Asian-Pacific business law. To date, the Institute has organized three international symposia in Hawai‘i and Hong Kong.
IAPBL is pleased to announce the 4th annual Business Boot Camp. Led by Richardson faculty and experienced practitioners, this two-day, intensive experience introduces students to basic financial and business concepts. The idea is to lay the groundwork for the students’ law school commercial and business courses and to help build financial literacy.
