ACADEMIC POLICIES
As a fully ABA-accredited law school, credits earned at the William S. Richardson School of Law are generally transferable to other ABA-approved programs. To ensure a seamless experience, please review the following requirements:
- ABA Standards: All summer courses are designed and conducted in strict accordance with the American Bar Association (ABA) Standards for Approval of Law Schools.
- The “Letter of Good Standing”: To enroll as a visiting student, you must provide a letter confirming you are in good academic standing from your home school’s Dean of Students or Registrar.
- Residency Credits: Every law school has unique rules regarding “residency” (the time spent in a classroom setting). We strongly recommend you verify with your Registrar how many weeks of the Hawaiʻi Summer Law Program will count toward your graduation residency requirements.
- A student may not take more than 7 credits during a Summer semester without prior written approval of the Law School Registrar.
- Grade Transfer Policy: At most law schools, credits for summer study at a different institution transfer as Credit (CR) or No Credit (NC).
- Typically, you must earn a grade of “C” (2.0) or higher to receive credit.
- Summer grades usually do not impact your cumulative GPA at your home school, but you should confirm this with your home institution.
- Grades for Summer 2026 Law Classes are due August 28, 2026 regardless of the summer session.
- We do not mail grade reports. View your final grades on STAR the week of August 31, 2026.
- Official Transcripts: Upon completion of your summer courses, you must request an official transcript from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Office of the Registrar to be sent directly to your home school for credit processing.
If You Need to Cancel
To receive a 100% tuition refund, you must submit your cancellation via email or postmarked letter by the specific deadline for your course.
- Important: Because summer sessions vary in length (Session I vs. Session II), refund deadlines are course-specific.
- Deadlines: Please cross-reference your course dates on our Important Dates & Deadlines table.
- Late Withdrawals: Refunds for cancellations made after the posted deadlines are typically not granted.
If the University Cancels a Course
The William S. Richardson School of Law reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances or low enrollment. If your course is cancelled:
- Full Refund: You will receive a 100% refund of all tuition and fees paid for that course.
- Early Notice: We will notify all enrolled students via email before the course is scheduled to begin.
- Placement Assistance: We will work with you to help you enroll in an alternative summer course at Richardson.
Externships are generally limited to UH Law students. Non-UH law students must be approved on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the Externship Director. Externships are offered at 2, 4, or 6 credit increments.
