Professor Nicholas Mirkay Named Michael J. Marks Distinguished Professor in Business Law

HONOLULU, Hawaiʻi (April 27, 2026) — The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is proud to announce that Professor Nicholas Mirkay has been named the Michael J. Marks Distinguished Professor in Business Law for 2026–2029.

This distinguished professorship recognizes excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service in business law and reflects Richardson Law’s commitment to preparing students for the evolving demands of today’s legal and economic landscape.

“Professor Mirkay’s deep commitment to our students, thoughtful and probing scholarship, and dedicated spirit of service exemplify the heart of our Richardson community,” Dean Camille Nelson said. “Building on the impressive legacy of past Marks Professors, Prof. Mirkay will carry forward a tradition of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and care that strengthens our community. We warmly congratulate Prof. Mirkay on this well-deserved honor.”

Professor Mirkay, who joined the Richardson faculty in 2017 and most recently served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, has played a key role in shaping the law school’s curriculum and strengthening its business law offerings. He teaches courses in tax, trusts and estates, nonprofits, and business law, and his scholarship explores issues of tax policy, specifically inequality and economic dignity in tax systems.

“I’m honored to be awarded this professorship and continue the important work of prior holders of this professorship,” Professor Mirkay said. “I’m also thankful to The Michael J. Marks Foundation for its generosity and commitment to both the practical legal training of our students and the academic excellence of this law school.”

Before entering academia, Professor Mirkay practiced as a tax and business lawyer and worked with the Internal Revenue Service and the United States Tax Court. He has received outstanding faculty awards at multiple institutions and was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Richardson Law in 2020.

Established in 2010 through the generosity of The Michael J. Marks Foundation and other supporters, the professorship honors the legacy of Michael J. Marks, a respected attorney and former Vice President and General Counsel of Alexander & Baldwin. The professorship supports the continued advancement of business law education at Richardson Law and prepares students to navigate complex legal issues in business and the broader economy.
